What Germany can learn from Thuringia.

What needs to change in digitising government? At the big-picture level, governments and politicians know. But what, concretely? And which supposedly small details drive citizens up the wall? To find out, Thuringia did something very smart: it asked the people. After a year, the state is now taking stock.

The main things reported were:

having to submit the same documents repeatedly

missing digital ways to apply

different requirements depending on the authority

long waiting times for building and permit procedures

Here’s what Thuringia concluded from that:

greater use of the Once-Only principle

digitising building applications

reducing media breaks

simplifying proof requirements

That’s remarkable. Because here, criticism of bureaucracy is being used as a data source for process reform. Bravo, Thuringia!
