Can’t be done. Can be done!

Estonia has been showing for years how it works. The foundation for it is called X-Road.

Explained briefly:

• No central data platform
• No “everything in one place”
• Instead, a system that connects existing registers with each other

Every authority keeps its own data. But it becomes shareable. And exactly that is what creates the “Once Only” principle.

Moving house? The residents’ register has the current address.

Income? The tax data is already on file.

Vehicle? The registration office knows.

Other authorities access it when needed. In real time. What fundamentally changes as a result: the citizen is no longer the one delivering information. They don’t have to obtain proofs. Don’t have to upload documents. Don’t have to enter data multiple times. The state organises its data itself. And gives citizens the most valuable thing there is: time!
