Trust through transparency:
The UK example

Many citizens are sceptical about the use of AI in government. At the same time, studies show that acceptance rises when users can see transparently where, when and why AI is being used. The UK is now drawing conclusions from that, and publicly showing where the state uses algorithms.

On GOV.UK, anyone who wants to can look up at any time, in the register for algorithmic systems, where AI is being used in the public sector. Quite often, by the way: 142 applications are already documented there at present. Even more exciting: it’s not just bare information on use or non-use — the data goes deeper:

Among other things, you can trace which authorities use a system, what it’s specifically used for, and what technological capabilities are behind it. The status can also be checked, and you can find out whether an AI is still in the pilot phase or already fully operational.
