Vision? Denmark! Denmark wants to lead the way (again). Having already decided to abolish all official letters and rolling out zero-input government step by step, the new plan goes even further: government without human action.

This so-called no-touch government follows a radical principle: it happens without anyone having to do anything. Automatically, often invisibly, proactively — sometimes even before anyone knows they need it. If you move house in Denmark, you’re not supposed to have to do anything beyond picking your new wall colour. Registering your old and new address happens automatically. If you have a child, child benefit is paid into your account automatically from the following month. And if you’re about to retire, you get a digital notice that everything has already been switched over automatically with your health insurer and others, and that your first pension payment is on its way. Just like that!

Radical — and not without risk! Because what about data protection? And who checks that it’s all correct? Denmark is already discussing these questions today. While many countries are still building digital forms, Denmark is tackling the next stage of digital government: how can administration work without citizens having to interact with it at all?
