Here’s where the EU Digital Identity Wallets stand.

Digital identity is the key to accessing digital services simply, quickly, and efficiently (see my post from last week). And while so far every country in Europe has been tinkering with its own solution, the ONE FOR EVERYTHING is finally arriving: eIDAS 2.0 — the EU Digital Identity Wallets.

What exactly is eIDAS 2.0?

eIDAS 2.0 is the further development of the existing eIDAS regulation (I’ll spare you the details), extending the rulebook with digital identities and wallets, new trust services and — very importantly — a mandatory rollout by all member states. Every EU citizen is meant to be able to get a digital identity wallet by the end of 2026 at the latest, in order to then use digital services across the whole EU.

Where does Germany stand?

Germany will (probably) not meet the deadline. At least not on time:

➤ A test phase is planned from the end of 2025.

➤ From early 2026, partners and service providers are meant to be onboarded.

➤ From 2027, the government wallet via smartphone should be available nationwide.

But a lot of questions are still open. Whether the plan becomes reality, we’ll know by 2026 at the latest. Nevertheless, the potential is enormous. Authorities and administrations absolutely have to engage with this topic.
