Everyone talks about portals, apps, wallets and services. Us too. But one aspect of digitisation keeps falling by the wayside: register modernisation. The what?

The word isn’t just typically German, it’s also not exactly catchy. But what’s behind it could decide whether German digitisation succeeds or fails.

The principle is simple: authorities should be able to exchange information with each other. And citizens shouldn’t have to keep giving the same details over and over. What sounds trivial is, in practice, a fundamental overhaul. Because today the opposite is often still true: data sits scattered, unconnected, and gets requested again and again. That means even digital processes stay needlessly complicated. Register modernisation is exactly where this starts.

It creates the conditions for:

• consistent, end-to-end processes
• real-time data
• and, in the long run, principles like Once Only

Without modern registers, there’s no real digitisation.
