Germany is currently testing the EU Digital Identity Wallet. An important step. Because with the wallet, people will be able to identify themselves across Europe and use digital government services — eventually.

Right now, though, the pilot project is once again a test flight flying under the radar. Or are you already using the new EU Wallet? Exactly.

The problem: the use cases are missing. As so often. The technology moves forward, but the concrete applications stay unclear. And you can only convince people of something new if the benefit is obvious (and using it is easy).

So we always ask: how does the product become relevant for people:

• What problem does it solve?
• Which trip to an authority becomes unnecessary?
• How much time is saved?

Right now, the answers to that remain vague. And that’s such a shame! Because fundamentally, the idea is exactly right, and an important step towards a unified European digital market.

Here are a few application ideas with real added value:

• I can register my residence digitally, anywhere in Europe.
• I can start a company anywhere in Europe.
• I can use one wallet to access government portals and apps in every country.

Not building the wallet.
