Let’s follow Friedrichshafen’s lead:

This is how user-centred digitisation works.

For us at Stadtmanufaktur.Digital, user-centred development is decisive for the success of digitisation in Germany. But what does user-centred UX actually mean?

It means putting people at the centre. Not just building IT applications, but designing them step by step together with those who’ll actually use them: real users. To do that, developers and consultants above all have to ask questions and keep going back into dialogue:

  • What do users need?
  • Where do analogue processes get stuck?
  • Which steps are confusing or unnecessary?

The city of Friedrichshafen showed how this works in practice, digitising the application for a civil status certificate in a strictly user-centred way. The approach: ask people first, then develop the service.

To do this, citizens were asked about their experiences, in order to identify typical problems. A digital prototype was then created, and tested and improved multiple times.

The result: a noticeably clearer, well-guided online service.

What do you think of this approach?
