We often talk about Germany here, sometimes Europe, and rarely the US. But how digital is administration in the country that stands for IT expertise like no other?

India has built one of the biggest state digital platforms in the world.

Instead of developing individual systems like Germany, India relies on big platforms, where more and more services are meant to become available step by step: Aadhaar, UPI and India Stack.

These systems form the basis for everything else. And even though a lot is planned, most of it hasn’t yet arrived in people’s everyday lives — almost the way we know it from Germany. Digitisation has so far been especially successful in the financial sector, for example for digital payments, fast account opening, and government transfer payments made directly to citizens (something Germany still struggles with). Here, the more than one billion Indians have experienced a massive digitisation boost.

In other areas, a lot is still at the pilot stage. Especially in administration. Digitising the healthcare system is also only just beginning. So in India, the digital groundwork is there — but the applications are missing. The problems are, as so often:

organisational implementation

integration into administrative processes

varying maturity across sectors.

Still, there’s a lot we can learn from India.
