So why aren’t countries investing more in their most important asset?

When we talk about digitising government, many people first think of new IT systems, platforms or data spaces. And we do need all of that. But what’s often forgotten: even the best platform is useless if nobody can operate it.

Current analyses from the European Commission show: the decisive bottleneck often lies in digital skills within the public sector. In other words, in the people on the ground in the authorities.

No wonder. Because digitisation constantly creates new requirements for staff. Governments and administrations therefore need to invest specifically in further training and build skills in various areas:

• data and data analysis
• the basics of AI and algorithmic systems
• digital process design
• agile project methods
• IT and platform architectures in government

Whoever builds these skills systematically creates the foundation for new technologies to actually have an impact — and for digitisation to finally reach the heart of society.
