Bremen adopts an AI strategy for administration.

Why only now? Shouldn’t a strategy for digital government have been adopted ten years ago already? Yes — but. Because Bremen actually adopted a strategy exactly ten years ago that was already about digitising administration. But back then, nobody had heard of ChatGPT and co. AI has only really entered everyday life since 2022. Other states, too, have adopted their strategies afresh several times over — because something meant to last a long time can become outdated faster than an opened avocado, given the current pace of development.

So it’s good and right for the federal government and the states to keep adapting and expanding their strategies. But what’s actually in the new Bremen strategy?

Seven action areas and 39 concrete projects, including:

· cross-departmental data and AI infrastructure
· a competence centre for AI in government
· automated capture and pre-checking of standardised applications
· better cross-departmental use of data,
· AI support for staff,
· AI-based analysis of geo and administrative data.

It’s also notable what Bremen explicitly wants to avoid: one-sided dependency on individual providers or technologies. The administration is meant to keep sovereignty over its own data. That doesn’t just create more security, but above all more trust. What do you think of the new Bremen strategy?
