Rivers, cheap energy, well-trained workers — the classic location factors are getting competition. And here it is.

Digital government is long since more than just a nice-to-have. It decides whether a location works. Companies today don’t just compare taxes, wages or infrastructure. They compare how quickly they can start a business, how reliably permits are processed, and how much time they lose to bureaucracy.

Digitising government is becoming a competitive factor:

  • How quickly can you start a new business?
  • How long does a building project take?
  • How much overhead does bureaucracy require?

Germany is at a decisive point here. Many services are available digitally, but not consistently efficient. Permits often take longer than necessary, processes remain fragmented. The problem isn’t a lack of digitisation.
The problem is a lack of impact.

If Germany wants to become more attractive for investment again, it has to start with digitisation.
