Different from what many think.

For years, politicians have given big speeches about digitisation. Plans get made, laws get passed, targets get announced. But how far have administrations actually come? The OECD looked into this for its member states — and found: AI is the new junior caseworker.

Artificial intelligence has reached public administration — not as a disruptive force, but as a pragmatic tool. AI won’t run administration, but it will keep administrations able to work: mainly by taking routine tasks off human staff, giving them more time for the harder work. So, for now, AI will NOT automate administration or make decisions on its own. Instead, AI speeds up people’s work, for example by scanning applications, structuring information, or storing data — in other words, taking over routine tasks.
