How digital and analogue the states really are

Europe still rarely stands united, and is often diverse — especially when it comes to digitisation. Across Europe, 41% of people have already used their ID to verify themselves online for digital government services. But look at the countries individually, and you get a completely different picture. One of digital and analogue nations that aren’t driving into the future at the same speed. Over 90% of Danes, 98% of the Dutch, 94% of Finns and 93% of Swedes have already identified themselves digitally. But only around 10% of Cypriots, 6% of Bulgarians, and just 9% of Germans.

Why? The reasons vary from country to country, but past studies have shown: in countries like Germany, there still aren’t many use cases for the digital ID, and where there are, the applications are complicated and error-prone. Above all, though, using the digital ID is nowhere near standard yet — it’s more of a curious exception.
