And everything’s about to change? Are we witnessing the start of a new era? If so, it’s starting, of all places, in Abu Dhabi. Because there, government is being radically rethought. Instead of digitising old processes, the government is redesigning the entire administration from scratch — using AI wherever possible.

Not at some vague point in the future. Already by 2027, the “world’s first AI government” is supposed to take over a large part of public administration:

• Applications are processed automatically.
• Decisions are made based on data.
• Resources are managed by AI.

And — almost even more interesting — the AI is meant to continuously optimise itself, making government better and more efficient over time.

But where do people fit in? They’re still part of government, of course. But their role changes: from doing the work to checking the work. So AI isn’t meant to govern on its own. The vision is rather an administration where AI takes over the operational work, and employees become more like reviewers, oversight bodies and decision-makers. So the interesting question isn’t whether people will still work in government in future. It’s what tasks they’ll take on there.

In many countries, we’re still digitising forms today. Abu Dhabi is already thinking about what a state looks like whose processes are designed for AI from the very start.
